Hi, I’m Shannon.
I’m a critical care nurse, a mother, and the founder of Back Pocket Caregiver. I’ve spent more than 20 years working in healthcare, but some of my most important lessons came from experiencing the system as a caregiver.
When my late husband was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer at just 36 years old, our family entered a healthcare journey that lasted four and a half years. Suddenly, I wasn’t only a nurse—I was also a wife and caregiver trying to keep track of appointments, test results, medications, insurance issues, difficult conversations, and the needs of our children.
Even with my nursing background, it was overwhelming.
I saw how easily important information could become scattered between providers and healthcare systems. I experienced how rushed appointments can feel and how much responsibility falls on patients and families in moments when they are frightened, exhausted, and least prepared to manage it all.
That experience changed the way I understand healthcare.
I created Back Pocket Caregiver to share the practical knowledge, resources, and real-world tools I wish every patient and caregiver had in their back pocket. My goal is to help you organize important information, prepare for appointments, ask informed questions, and feel more confident participating in healthcare decisions.
I believe knowledge can restore some of the autonomy that illness and uncertainty often take away. You may not be able to control every part of the journey, but with the right information and support, you can feel more prepared, more empowered, and less alone.
Back Pocket Caregiver is beginning with education, guides, and useful resources for patients and families. Over time, I hope to expand that support through courses and personalized healthcare-navigation services.
Wherever you are in the journey, I’m glad you’re here.
